Over the years there have been several books on motherhood that have really blessed me.
They've encouraged me by way of reminder that motherhood is such a noble calling.
A mother has such a profound influence on her children.
Honestly, though even better than these great books, have been a few women in my life who have influenced me more in my journey of motherhood.
They have shown me by their example what a beautiful mother/woman is.
This dear friend I met a couple of years after relocating to Washington. We were able to be in several Bible studies together and she openly shared her heart about what God was currently teaching her. She often would say things that were golden nuggets of wisdom. She taught me to pray Scripture, "because when in a situation that needs prayer, but we don't know His will or how to pray... remember that His Word is His will."
She has the sweetest servant's heart. She is currently caring for her father, who is 95 and receiving hospice care.
Motherhood teaches us self-sacrifice. To put the needs of others before our own - not out of duty, but out of love.
Mothering stretches us, not just our bellies, but our character.
It brings us to our knees as we despair in our weakness, seeking strength from the Savior.
This friend I have known since our first day on a college campus. She has encouraged me in countless ways - always by her gracious example and sweet spirit. She has experienced the sharpest sting of motherhood because she has a child waiting in heaven. I have deeply admired her strength. Read here to be blessed. I still glean so much from her whenever I get to spend time with her. We are kindred spirits.
Mothers lie awake praying for protection of both body and soul. For the hearts of her children to be heavenly minded. For God to hem them in and captivate them completely.
Another woman who has influenced my life is my mom-in-law. She loosened her apron strings to let her littlest chick fly westward. Although her heart probably ached for him to stay close by, I am forever grateful to her.
In spite of the many miles apart, she has been able to be here to enjoy several babies, and each time she was more than willing rock a fussy newborn when we were weary.
Motherhood is beautiful and terrifying all at once.
The single most influential woman in my life is my own mother.
She taught me that life is a gift and best enjoyed when lived fully.
She has believed in me when I've doubted myself, she has encouraged me to always do my best, and she has loved me when I was unlovable. She would. She's my mom.
I am so thankful she is my friend too.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never fails.
Children are not a distraction from more important work. They are the most important work.
C.S. Lewis
Note to self: Have fun with the kids!
Wishing all moms a Happy Mother's Day!
Happy mommy's day. :) <3
